Gmail is an essential app for many Android users and a built-in e-mail client on so many devices. However, there are instances when it simply won’t work as intended. We covered notification issues that bothered so many users around the world and now it seems that the Gmail app is crashing for many others.
If you are among them, follow the steps we listed below. Keep in mind that this applies to stock ROMs and not custom ones. It’s quite common for GAPPS (Google Apps packages) to cause problems like this. If you are using a custom AOSP non-Gapps ROM and flashed Gapps, we can’t help you other than recommend switching to a Gapps-included ROM.

ToggleHow to Fix Gmail not Working on Android issue?
1. Clear cache and data from Gmail
Firstly, let’s address the possible corruption of cached files. It seems that this issue is especially present after major Android upgrades and clearing everything should fix the problem instantly.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps & notifications.
- Select All apps.
- Open Gmail from the list of available apps.
- Select Storage.
- Clear cache and data.
- Get back and check Permissions.
- Grant all permissions to Gmail.
- Restart your device.
2. Sign out and sign in to your account
The next step to try is to remove your Google Account and add it again. There might be a problem with your accounts if you tend to switch them often. Again, if you are using a custom ROM, issues with Google Services and their effects on apps like Gmail, are common.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Open a Google account.
- Remove the account and restart your device.
- Sign in again to your Google Account and check for improvements with Gmail.
3. Reinstall Gmail updates
The next thing you can try is reinstalling Gmail. This is an essential pre-installed Android app so you won’t be able to remove it (at least, not in a safe way). So, what you can do is uninstall all updates and check for improvements.
Here’s how to remove updates from Gmail:
- Navigate to Google Play Store.
- Look for Gmail.
- Tap Uninstall to remove all updates.
- Restart your device and open Gmail afterwards.
If the Gmail app keeps crashing, make sure to check the additional steps below.
4. Rollback to an older version of Gmail
An alternative way to address the Gmail app crashing is to roll back the app. Chances are that the latest app release that you have on your device has an underlying issue and the best way to tackle that is to download and install an older version of Gmail from the APK Mirror.
Follow these instructions to roll back to an older version of Gmail on your Android:
- Navigate to APK Mirror.
- Download an older version of Gmail. Make sure to stick to recent versions to avoid compatibility issues but avoid the latest version.
- Allow installation from third-party sources and install the APK.
- Restart your device and give Gmail another try.
5. Clear cache and data from Google’s service
Finally, make sure that related Google Services are functioning as intended. Gmail and other pre-installed apps heavily rely on them and chances are that they are the reason why the Gmail app is crashing.
Here’s what you need to do in order to clear locally stored data from Google services:
- Navigate again to Settings > Apps & notifications > All apps.
- Tap on the 3-dot menu and select Show System.
- Open Google Play Services, Google Play Store, and Google Services Framework, one by one, and clear cache and data from all 3 apps.
- Restart your device and look for improvements.
